5. Read the following passage, then answer the questions :- (5 Marks)
Global warming is regarded as a pressing issue nowadays. Scientists fear that this phenomenon will have profound effects on the economy and standard of living of the world’s people. If the climate continues to grow warmer, the polar ice caps will begin to melt and the level of the world’s oceans will rise. Weather patterns will be affected, and areas of the planet that now get a lot of rain will get considerably less. The climate may stabilize, providing the world can control its output of CO2 which is produced by burning fossil fuels, such as coal and oil. If the world community can slow the wide-scale destruction of the world’s rainforests, this might also slow down the process a little bit. There are already indications that we may be too late. Many regions of the world are experiencing their worst droughts in recorded history. If these droughts continue for another year, there will not be enough water to support the present populations in those areas, and it will be necessary to ration water, or perhaps to sell it like gasoline, a litre at a time.
1- In what way is global warming a threat to the world’s people?
2- When do the world’s oceans rise?

5- Read the following passage and then answer the questions.
Since the beginning of time, man's life has been a continuous struggle. This struggle has always been connected with his daily needs. At the beginning man struggled to feed and clothe himself and to keep himself warm. So, he invented hunting weapons, weaving and making fire. As modern man's needs have grown more and more complex, his struggle had taken another shape. For instance, he doesn't only struggle to make a fire to warm himself and cook his food, but seeks to control the hidden powers of nature that could run his machines and make his life easier and more comfortable. To achieve that, he has depended on petroleum. But, as the price of petroleum is getting higher and higher and the supply is getting lower and lower, man is now turning to other sources of energy such as the atom and the sun.
1- For what purpose did man invent hunting weapons?
2- What's driving man to use the sun as a source of power? 3- Show the difference between man's struggle in earlier times and modern times.
4- Man invented weaving in order to…………..
a) feed himself b) keep himself warm c) clothe himself d) shelter himself
5- The sources of energy the writer mentioned in the passage are……..
a) two sources b) three sources c) four sources d) five sources
5- Read the following passage and then answer the questions.
The most common causes of death among western people are heart disease and cancer. Thanks to recent medical research, new effective drugs have been developed and surgical techniques have been improved. But even greater progress has been made in the field of prevention. The old proverb “Prevention is the surest form of cure” has never been more relevant than now. Having identified the causes of most common diseases, we are now able to prevent them. Heart disease is caused by obesity, stress and smoking. It can often be avoided simply by eating the right food and by getting plenty of exercise. Many types of cancer are caused by dietary factors and may be prevented by maintaining a healthy, balanced diet. Lung cancer is generally caused by living and working in a polluted environment and by smoking. It may be avoided by changing one’s environment and by quitting smoking. Prevention is not only the surest form of cure, it is also the cheapest!
1- What are the commonest deadly diseases in the West? How far has
medical research been able to help?
2- How far is the old proverb still wise today? Why?
3- What do some causes of disease and cancer have in common?
3- An obese patient is advised to ………………………………..…
a) look for surgical techniques b) change his / her diet
c) lose weight by eating less and exercising more d) find a sure and cheap cure

The Road to success is not straight
The road to success is not straight. You will have obstacles on the way. One should exert more effort to overcome any sort of hardships. In deed, there are no gains without pains. We need to have a strong well to reach our hopes and achieve our ambitions. If you have determination, you will go to a place called success. Nothing equals the happiness of success. This is a true saying because we all work for success whose joy can be felt by successful people and their families and close friends. To succeed in life, you must do your best in achieving you aims. One should work to a plan and invest his time. One should be hopeful, tolerant , careful, wise and brave to succeed in his life . we must obey God and respect our parents. We need to consult old people to gain more experience from them . we should have good friends to encourage us to do better and be positive. When we reach our goal, we must work harder to keep it. We must avoid the enemies of success in fact, there is no sweet without sweat. We should work hard to achieve our goals
The world financial crisis and prices rise
The world has suffered from the worst economic crisis since the 1930s.What Caused the Crisis? This crisis resulted from overspending and carrying too much debt. People are used to a lifestyle of living wastefully without regard to their debts. They don't have enough savings to bear such financial hardships. They try to buy everything new. They don't have wise plans to reuse old things or economize their natural resources. To face the world financial crisis, all sectors should increase their actual productivity and the total expenditure should be increased to complete infrastructure projects, which may require enormous funds. In addition, the Arab funds operating in the area of development should play their role and adopt a national plan to complete the projects of electricity and infrastructure in the Arab world.
All people all over the world can not ignore that there is a financial problem sweeps away the world especially people in what is called third world countries. The rise in prices swallows up every increase in wages and salaries. All parties of society suffer from the rise of prices. But what should we do to stop this problem .Should we wait for government to reduce prices? All individuals should play an effective role to fight the greedy merchants and sellers .Some of them raise prices without any reasons because they know that many customers will not ask about this rise in prices. We should stop buying some articles at least for some days this will be an alert to greedy merchants. All people should boycott تقاطع for examples meat and fruit, this may force the greedy traders to reconsider the list of prices and the suppliers of food think before they sell their products.we need to reduce consumption. Recycling is a good way to benefit from everything we have
